2 травня 2023 року (вівторок) о 10:00 в ННЦ «Інститут біології та медицини» в рамках освітньо-наукового проєкту «Освіта та наука без кордонів» та реалізації освітньої діяльності за Освітніми програмами «Біологія» та «Медицина», за запрошенням кафедри біофізики та медичної інформатики буде проведена відкрита лекція Prof. Dirk van Helden (AD Scientific Index 2023 - h-index 43) - Honorary Professor at the University of Newcastle, Australia

Dirk van Helden is an Australian physiologist who investigates biological activities primarily related to smooth muscles including lymphatic and blood vessels. He has collaborated with many international scientists, including during fellowship and sabbatical visits to Cambridge University, Oxford University, Cornell University, University of California Irvine, University of Tubingen, Cajal Institute, Karolinska Institute, Gif-sur-Yvette du CNRS and Nagoya City University. A focus has been mechanisms underlying rhythmic activity in various tissues, a process termed pacemaking. Through his investigations on rhythmic contractions in lymphatic and gastric smooth muscle some interesting discoveries were made, including a new mechanism for pacemaking. It turns out that this mechanism underlies rhythmic activity in many smooth muscles and even functions as a co-mechanism in heart pacemaking. His present research is to apply some of this knowledge to improving first aid for snakebite.

Topic of the lecture will be «How venoms enter the circulation consequent to snakebite». Snakebite remains a major problem in many tropical/sub-tropical countries and causes approximately 100,000 deaths per year and some 300,000 mortalities, many involving amputations. This lecture will investigate mechanisms by which snake venoms enter the circulation consequent to snakebite. The presentation will give insight into:

1) How lymphatics function to uptake and transport venoms and
2) How venoms act on low pressure blood vessels to increase permeability and hence directly enter the blood stream.
3) How this knowledge might lead to improved snakebite first aid approaches.

The presentation should be of interest to biology and medical students, as it will provide knowledge into key functional properties of the lymphatics and blood vessels.
